Controlled Group Limited holds Health, Safety and the Environment as a core business value and is committed to improving company and industry standards by developing procedures and processes to reduce injury and incident risks.

The health and safety of its employees, sub-contractors and the general public is of paramount importance to Controlled Group Ltd, which is why effective training information and instruction is one of our safety principles.

Planning for Health & Safety within the organisation has always been an integral part of our health and safety strategy, however with the recent changes to our Health & Safety procedures and more focus on behavioural safety, our goal of zero accidents and incidents is more achievable.

Our senior management team, down to our site managers have undergone in house training and development days to indicate the levels of safety behaviour now acceptable, we named the initiative Felt Leadership. Part of the development involves the management stopping and discussing unsafe acts or conditions seen immediately with the employees / contractors involved. This not only increases communication but deals directly with issues before accidents occur rather than spending time contacting the safety department to sort out the issue or spending time finding supervision or the site manager.

Failure to deal with safety related hazards immediately could allow time for injuries to occur or send the wrong message to employees, that what they are doing is acceptable as the boss has seen and said nothing.

Over the months that this initiative has been running, the divide previously seen between the senior management team and staff has reduced. Operatives and staff are far more willing to engage in safety related discussions which brings the ideal of a safety culture closer.

To help employees focus on Health, Safety & Environmental issues we developed a number of simple principles;

• We are all directly responsible for preventing injuries, occupational illnesses and environmental impact.

• Training, information and instruction is essential to maintain a competent workforce and a safe place to work

• All unsafe acts and conditions must be dealt with promptly

• It is essential to report & investigate all Injuries and near miss incidents with injury potential.

• People are the most critical element in the success of any Health and Safety program
