Hirwaun Towers

Prior to blowdown the buildings were soft stripped and all asbestos containing materials removed. All foundations were removed with all inert materials crushed on site and re-used in the local market leaving the site clear for redevelopment. One final bonus for Rhondda Cynon Taf was a 15% saving on the original target cost. Through workshops all risks were jointly identified and action plans put in place to manage the risks appropriately. The buildings were successfully demolished by controlled explosives in a first for Wales as part of a £625,000 contract.

In order to comply with funding restrictions Rhondda Cynon Taf Council required to demolish two 12 storey buildings in a very short period. This along with the risks associated with a live phone mast on one of the buildings was why Rhondda Cynon Taf chose to employ Controlled Group using a target cost contract with an open book philosophy.
